GCEA Statement of Values

We, the Genetic Counselor Educators Association (GCEA) are guided by a Statement of Values. These principles guide our work and our interactions with each other.

Our Core Values

1. Integrity

We believe that our interactions with each other should be from a place of honesty, respect, transparency, and integrity where various perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds are celebrated, and everyone feels they belong.

2. Collaboration

We believe in open communication that supports and encourages us to increase our knowledge, strengthen our competency skills, and reflect on our practices to enhance our effectiveness as educators. We commit to creating a culture of collaboration through resource sharing and mentorship for meaningful impact.

3. Excellence

We believe in striving for excellence driven by effort and a desire to learn and to grow, so as to achieve high quality results while taking pride in the work we do. We stay flexible and open to change, adapting to shifts in the educational sector and the genetic counseling profession.

4. Awareness, Accountability, and Growth

We believe that we have a shared responsibility to recognize all perspectives, experiences, and identities. We commit to ongoing self-reflection, recognizing how our perspectives influence our interactions, and to actively addressing harmful behaviors. We strive to grow as a community through this intentional self-reflection.

GCEA would like to appreciate and acknowledge Riyana Babul-Hirij, Robin Bennett, Gayun Chan-Smutko, Jessica Denton, Lisa Kessler, and Leah Zaretsky for their work to develop and refine this Statement of Values.
